Baby Bumps and Style - Dressing during Pregnancy

Expectant mothers glow. It’s such a special time in a woman’s life and it shows in their skin, clear eyes and hair.

With these few tips on what to wear, you can dress to show off your baby bump in the most flattering and stylish way, and avoid feeling like a bit of a frump…..

1. Belt Up! A belt emphasizes where the belly starts, and gives you some shape.

2. Maxi skirts are cool, comfortable and cute!

3. Wear black – it’s always slimming.

4. Layer with thin fabrics.

5. Work the maxi dress.

6. Choose tonal block colours over big, busy prints to streamline your figure, making it appear longer and leaner.

7. Trade heels for flats, platforms or wedges, especially in the third trimester, when your bump may upset your balance.

8. Accessorize!

Here’s a few things to avoid….

1. Bulky fabrics.

2. Tops that are too short in the front.

3. Tight bras, panties and waistbands.

4. Shoes with ankle straps, if your feet swell.

5.  Overly baggy pants – they might be comfortable but can give the illusions that you are bigger than you really are.

Talea 27 weeks

Shorts – Jeans West Maternity range $59.99

Singlet – Katies $14.95

Long Mesh Cardigan – TEMT $24.95

Shoes – Williams $69.99

Necklace – Lovisa $39.95

Bangles – Lovisa $19.99

Clutch – Colette $24.95

Style Notes

Always look to highlight/showcase your best features! Talea has long, long gorgeous legs, so it would be criminal not to show them off.

Wearing black on both the top and bottom half (singlet and shorts) with a long line jacket over the top elongates the figure, making you visually leaner.

A statement necklace draws the eyes towards the face, and the bright aqua clutch adds a pop of colour to the monochrome look.

Laura 24 weeks

Necklace – Tree of Life $29.95

Denim Jacket – Jay Jays $59.95

Belt – Just Jeans $34.95

Bag – Colette $49.95

Shoes – Spendless $9.99 Sale

Style Notes

Laura has gone from a size 26 to a 10-12 in the past 12 months, due to serious illness. Before she lost weight, she felt most comfortable wearing black and took no pleasure in shopping for clothing.  It is common for ladies who have undergone a drastic weight change to feel like they’ve lost their sense of style, and Laura expressed these feelings. After completing the workshop, she had a much clearer idea that she leaned towards a boho style of dressing, and that is how she has been styled.

The belt beneath the bust defines where her baby bump start, and adds shape to her figure. A statement necklace draws the attention up towards her face, and highlights her decollete.

A denim jacket always looks great with a maxi, fits in with the boho style, and in Laura’s case helped cover up loose skin on her upper arms.

Comfortable tan platform sandals add height, creating a longer and leaner looking figure.

Finally, a tan bag large enough to slip a couple of nappies, bottles etc into, complete the whole look.

Margarita 31 weeks

Cotton Shirt – Rockmans $39.99

Maxi Skirt – Katies $49.95

Singlet – Jeans West Maternity range $14.99

Necklace – TEMT $9.95

Bracelet – TEMT $9.95

Shoes – Spendless $49.99

Bag – Colette $49.95

Style Notes

Margarita is having her third child and at 31 weeks is sporting the largest baby bump on the day.

Maxi skirts are a great option during pregnancy, as long as they have stretch. The maxi skirt can be worn at the top of the bump, as Margarita is doing, with a light cotton shirt knotted beneath the bust.

The skirt can also be worn low, below the bump, with longer tops (fitted are better).

The cami has a scoop neckline, which is flattering during pregnancy, and the shirt worn unbuttoned but knotted below the bust creates a deep V, also flattering.

Margarita has a long torso and shorter legs, which is why she is wearing the skirt above the bump. Below the bump would make her legs look shorter.
