No matter what size or shape you are, having some definition at your natural waist is always flattering!
This is because a woman will look slimmer if the area below her bust to her 'natural waist' is enhanced or highlighted, rather than hidden.
Run both palms down the side of your torso and take note where it is most narrow.
This is your natural waist line. It will vary from woman to woman, and your natural waist might be have a high, right under your bust, or it could be quite low.
Regardless of where it sits, it is important to know where it is, so you can enhance and highlight.
And here are my top tips for doing just that!
1. Wear a belt.
If you are not confident with wearing a belt, choose a narrow belt that tones in with what you are wearing, and does not have too much buckle detail. Make sure you wear the belt on your natural waist, as the belt draws attention to the area where it is place. So, if you wear it lower across your tummy, that is the area the eye will be drawn to. Don't wear the belt too tight - it only needs to be tight enough to sit on your waist. Any tighter, and you might end up with a muffin top effect.
2. Use a fitted jacket, short cardigan or a vest to add definition.
3. Choose an empire line. An empire line has a seam below the bust and above the waist without little or no gathering, drawing attention to that area. This is a great tip for oval shaped women, including those who are pregnant.
4. Look for garments that have a triangle or two at the waist. This creates a visual illusion of a narrower waist, and is a very useful tip for rectangle body shaped women. The triangle may be created using colour, seams, pattern or ruching.
Hopefully, you should be able to immediately use some of this information with garments and accessories you already have in your wardrobe.
