How to Style a Shirt Dress

A shirt dress is a dress that is designed on the basis of a man's shirt, usually buttoned down the front and with a collar and cuffs. Chambray and cotton are popular fabrics for a shirt dress, which are most usually worn on a casual basis.

Unless you've been wearing blinkers when shopping lately, you'll have noticed that just about every women's fashion store is carrying at least one style of shirt dress. It's a trend that will carry right through until at least Autumn 2020, and women of all age, shape and size will be able to find a style to suit.

Here are a few things to be aware of when choosing your shirt dress.

Pockets:  If you are small in the bust, choose a style with pockets with flaps and buttons. Larger bosomed ladies should look for flat, more discreet, pockets.

A Loose Fit: Shirt dresses are designed to be worn loose, but not baggy. Too tight and the buttons will be straining, too loose and you'll look like you've gained a few kilos.

Hemline: Anywhere from mid thigh to mid calf can be appropriate at any age, but just bear in mind this simple rule - wear flat shoes with short shirt dresses and heels with longer shirt dresses. A shorter shirt dress worn with sneakers or espadrilles will look comfortable, casual and classy.

Collars: If you have a large bust, short or thick neck, or broad shoulders look for shirt dresses without a collar. Or choose to wear the top few buttons open, to create a deep V neckline.

Where's Your Waist?: Shirt dresses can be shapeless and baggy, which is not flattering regardless of your size or shape! Find the narrowest part of your torso beneath your bust and use a tie (often supplied) or belt to cinch in the dress a little, to highlight or accentuate your waist. You can also change the look of a shirt dress by changing from  tie to a narrow belt to a wide belt etc.

Pear? Don't Despair! Most shirt dresses are cut straight up and down - but not all.  Look for a fuller skirt if you are a triangle or full figure hourglass body shape, to avoid the shirt dress being tight across your hips and bottom.

Choose a Print: Most shirt dresses are plain in colour, but choosing an animal print, check or stripe is more than acceptable!
